They make a very personal statement and it's a matter of pride for the people who get them done. We will read a little about their history before getting into designs and ideas.

Are you curious about the origin of getting tattoos on the lips? Well it was from branding of the horses. Horses were, and still are, branded on the lower as well as upper lips for identification purposes. People started using these tattoos after women wanted to camouflage the problematic areas of their lips.
The problems can vary, for example some women used them to make their lips appear thicker while others used it to make their broad lips appear narrow. This was done by using dark red or brown pigments.

Design Ideas

The total area which can be used is very small in case of the lips. Hence, it is difficult to experiment with the designs, although you can experiment a little with the colors used.
The designs which are used are small and are also very simple. Lucky numbers can be used to make designs on the lips. Names of loved ones are very commonly used to make designs. However, there are other word designs which are also used.
The most common designs used are word tattoos.
Some of the most commonly used words include Cool, Peace, Lovely, Pain, Ouch, Heaven, Alone, Chaos, Carnivore, Thrash, Beer, etc. Along with the list of words just mentioned, offensive words can also be used to make such tattoos.
If you and your partner want to get one made, you can opt for words like 'Forever & Ever'. Each partner gets one word inked on their lips. In case you're going in for both the lips, you can choose something like 'No Warning', 'Danger Zone', etc.
You will have to ink the first word on the upper lip and the other word on the lower lip. If you have a funny bone, you can also opt for funny lip tattoos as well. People, also use misspelled words to make it a little different from the regular designs.
The most commonly misspelled words used are 'FUCT' or 'FCUK', etc. To make your design unique, you will have to be more creative.
If you're fond of designs more than words, there are options available as well. The most common among the designs are the heart and skull designs. However, you can be creative and get one of many floral designs made in small sizes.
Tattoos on or inside lips fade very easily. If statistics are to believed more than 40% of such tattoos fade after a year. If you want to maintain your tattoo, you will have to get it redone over and over again. Taking care is vitally important when it comes to labial designs.
However, just a word of caution - if you suffer from the oral herpes, then it is not recommended to undergo this process.
